The supporters of Amendment One, which would take away people’s rights to vote on certain kinds of local government debt, have consistently tried to deceive the public into thinking that what has traditionally been called “tax increment financing” (TIF) is a free lunch. First they changed the name from the accurately expressed TIF bonds to “self financed bonds.” The term “tax increment” sounds a little bit too much like tax increase, and after all who could be against a bond that is self financed. If it finances itself then you the taxpayer won’t have to finance it. When people started catching on to this bit of deception they simply started calling it Amendment One. Now to further deceive the public the pro-Amendment forces–who call themselves North Carolinians for Jobs and Progress (a deception in and of itself since socialism has never been either progressive or job creating)–have taken on the web address www.noamendmentone.com. They are deceptive in their name, they are deceptive in the way they portray the amendment, and now they’re deceptive in their web address. What else can you do when you have no other arguments?
