“Forsyth’s sheriff, commissioners disagree on turning in illegal immigrants”

When you read this Journal headline, you’re pretty sure you know who’s on which side of the ICE program allowing local law enforcement agencies to detain and process illegal immigrants.

Surprise: It’s Sheriff Bill Schatzman who’s against the program:

….Schatzman said he does not think the program is right for the county. And without his consent, the commissioners cannot move forward.

“We are not going to apply for a new program, not at this juncture. I have to apply. They do not apply,” Schatzman said. “They took it upon themselves to engage in conversations about an area they cannot enter.”

…..Schatzman said that local law enforcement already screens peoples’ immigration status when they are arrested for some serious crimes, such as murder. The federal program would expand that to all people arrested, regardless of their crime.

Uh, yeah. A zero-tolerance deportation policy, combined with ICE training for all local enforcement agencies, would be more effective than the stalled federal bill in dealing with illegal immigration, in my opinion.

Note the readers’ comments at the bottom of the article. Interesting that the majority don’t understand Schatzman’s point of view. What part of ‘illegal’ does Schatzman not understand, one reader asks. Good question.
