The last six months have been alarming to those of us who believe in freedom, free markets, and rational discussion of public policy rather than simplistic emotional appeals. That’s why a passage in the book Render Unto Caesar jumped out at me. Author Charles Chaput, the Archbishop of Denver, is discussing the role of Catholics in the public square, but his insightful words apply to every person.
Party loyality is a dead end. It’s a lethal form of laziness. Issues matter. Character matters. Acting on principle matters. The sound bite and the slogan do not matter. They belong to a vocabulary of the herd, and human beings deserve better. Real freedom demands an ability to think, and a great deal of modern life seems deliberately designed to discourage that.
Words to live by.
