University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee professor David Mulroy, who spoke at the Pope Center’s Oct. 8 conference, answers that they ought to read some of the great books. He makes his case here.

The only trouble is this: Why would your typical student enroll in a course where reading, say, the Iliad, is expected when he could get the same credit by taking a course where the prof assigns movies, music videos or at most a Twinkie text with lots of pictures and irrevelancies designed to appeal to kids these days?
