I’m wondering what is going on with Eagle Market Place. That is the section of Asheville’s downtown that has been in perpetual blight since urban renewal came along. After a perfectly happy neighborhood was destroyed; federal, state, and local dollars never managed to get reconstruction to lift off. Then, in 2012, Mountain Housing Opportunities, a recipient of government funding for affordable housing construction, partnered with the Eagle Market people, accepted a lot of local and federal money, and . . . A condition of at least some of the contracts was that people would be moving in by January 1, 2015. The city’s web page on the project hasn’t been updated in months, and the local papers are hush-hush.
