Yesterday, by request, we mentioned the recycling center proposed for Haywood County. The commissioners were going to sell the land, appraised at $780,000, for $330,000. An estimated 275 people showed up at the public hearing to protest. Well, there is an old adage that says if you want to control what goes on a piece of land, buy it. And that is what Dr. David Harley attempted. He asked at the public hearing if the county would sell him the land for $500,000. His economic multipliers weren’t as outrageous as those of developers seeking incentives, but he has already successfully constructed two business buildings in the area.
