News & Observer Executive Editor John Drescher announced a reorganization of the newsroom management in this morning’s paper. Here’s what he says is the advantage of the new structure:

The changes will make The N&O newsroom “quicker and more responsive” by cutting a level of management, Drescher said, and will allow the paper to maintain another front-line position, such as a reporter or photographer.

So, since removing a level of management will make things better, my question is: Was it former Executive Editor Melanie Sills’ position or former Managing Editor John Drescher’s that was keeping The N&O from being quick and responsive, and jeopardizing the job of some reporter or photographer?
