Today’s N&R lead editorial cautions the Greensboro City Council to act with caution regarding City Manager Mitchell Johnson:

At the root of it all is Johnson’s loss of trust in former police Chief David Wray, whom he stripped of some responsibilities and barred from his office in 2006. Johnson said he felt Wray had misled him about the existence of a photo lineup book used in an internal investigation. Two days later Wray resigned…..

Now some council members say they have lost trust in Johnson.

….As his direct boss, the council has every right (in fact, the obligation) to evaluate Johnson’s job performance. But can it do so without poisoning the process with posturing and politics, finger-pointing and speechifying?

….Johnson would then have the confidence of knowing he will be judged on his performance, not stuck wondering from day to day whether he has enough votes to survive the Tribal Council. That’s no way to have to earn a living and no way to expect an executive, or those who work for him, to do their best work.

Wait a minute. This mess has been going on for two years and now the council is supposed to exercise restraint? And (seems like I really can’t say it enough) just what was that show Johnson put on this time last year?
