Here is an excellent editorial on Investors Business Daily about Cuba (and a few other economic cripples like North Korea) and why it can’t produce enough food even for the meager diets of most of the people. The reason is not global warming (although Castro has taken to blaming that all-purpose villain) but socialism. Having prohibited a free market in land and requiring that collectivism be the rule in production, Castro has turned a nation that was a significant food exporter 50 years ago into a desperate food importer today.

This is the story of the Pilgrims on a big scale. Without private property and individual initiative, people go hungry. Still, leftists praise Castro for having accomplished so much for the people of Cuba. It would be great if Cuba became a huge Hong Kong after Castro goes.
