In Virginia Governor McDonnell would like to privatize the liquor stores. In this regard Virginia is like North Carolina. When it comes to selling booze socialism is preferred to capitalism. What is interesting is that McDonnell is being opposed by members of his own Republican Party–you know, the party of limited government. This article in the Washington Post tells the story. It is interesting that, for these Republicans, the question of whether or not it is the proper role of government to be the sole provider of booze doesn’t even come up. I guess the Virginia constitution is peculiar in this regard. It probably reads something like this, “the government of The Commonwealth of Virginia is to provide for the safety of the citizenry, adjudicate disputes, build roads, and sell liquor.”
