Winston-Salem is looking to spend $29 million on a downtown minor-league baseball stadium. Part of that money will be repaid via a $1 ticket surcharge the team owner will levy on fans.

Why can’t Knights owner Don Beaver pony up something to help cover the cost of his stadium package? Taken together, the $1 a year sweetheart lease of county land and $7 million in infrastructure costs amount to a $35 million subsidy for baseball.

Why won’t Beaver and the baseball fans who will supposedly flock to games Uptown pay some of that money back? Not even 50 cents a ticket? A quarter? Anything?

Guess if Charlotte did not ask it of billionaires Bob Johnson or Brian France, it is out of the question for Hickory’s own Don Beaver.
