Amidst the local controversy surrounding editorial endorsements comes this shocker: the Winston-Salem Journal endorses John McCain:
The Journal sides with McCain because he better suits this newspaper’s underlying editorial philosophy of limited government intrusion into the lives of American citizens, low taxes and fiscal responsibility. There is nothing in the character of Obama that makes us think he is unfit to be president. To the contrary, we admire much about the man. We just disagree with the course upon which he is likely to lead this nation.
‘Editorial philosophy of limited government intrusion into the lives of American citizens?’ I must have been missing something over the years I’ve been reading (and cursing) Journal editorials. It always seemed to me that they never saw a government program they didn’t like, federal, state or local, and their editorials have constantly portrayed citizens as poor uninformed bastards constantly in need of help from the benevolent state. I’m surprised, shocked, bewitched, bewildered.
But I’ll take it.
