Taking absolutely nothing away from the stellar effort to repeal North Carolina’s most recent gas tax hike, that levy at least as some relation to a public good, namely roads. Not so the outright revenue grab embodied by the hike on cable and satellite programming.

The state has no claim to the 7 percent tax it now takes from cable and satellite customers. They impose no unique burden on public services or infrastructure. It is a straight-up shakedown: You can afford cable? Then the criminals in Raleigh want a cut.
