Scotland Yard has backed off using the term “yob” to describe street hoodlums. The hoodlums, it seems, were offended. This reminds me of a meeting of The Herald-Sun’s editorial board some years ago about the time of the Michael Seagroves incident. A group of ministers were concerned about the paper’s coverage of the issue. When one of our editors called the kids who broke into Seagrove’s home that day criminals, the ministers protested. “Well, what would you call them?” he was asked. “We prefer to think of them as youth in need of services.” After this ministerial suggestion, we jokingly referred to youthful miscreants as YINS.
