While online National Review readers had a chance to devour John Hood’s analysis of the presidential race, readers of the print publication (known to some as National Review dead-tree) encountered Hood’s prescription for conservative fixes to the American system of higher education. Speaking of higher education, Pope Center senior writer Jay Schalin made the case in the News & Observer this week that lawmakers should reject a proposal to mandate volunteerism for college students. Schalin’s colleague, Pope Center Vice President for Research George Leef, attracted attention this week in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for his argument that faculty unions help dilute the quality of higher education.
