WTKF’s Lockwood Phillips has adopted education as a key
topic with his coastal listeners, and Lindalyn
Kakadelis has become a frequent guest, recently appearing two Fridays in a row. Last Thursday night, Kakadelis spoke about
charters and school
choice with the Down East Republican Club, and this week she addressed
the legislative committee of Union Academy Charter School and taped a
program about the ABCs of accountability with the Classroom
Teachers Association. Meanwhile, two of Karen Palasek’s commentaries
were published last week. Her column on national board
certification for teachers appeared in Dunn’s Daily Record. Although the state spends millions each year to subsidize it, studies show NBPTS
certification doesn’t result in significant gains in student
achievement. “Marching Band: Out of Tune With School
Budgets” was picked up by The Conservative Voice. Palasek discussed wants vs. needs, which subjects should be elements of the sound, basic education required by recent
court rulings, and what subjects should be funded with user fees. “Take a hint from the very parents who
protest user fees: If you wouldn’t pay for it in the market, it’s a
lower-priority item, and needn’t be part of the publicly funded
basics,” she wrote.
