News is breaking that Guilford County Schools will hire Dr. Sharon Contreras as its new superintendent.

Contreras is currently superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, where she had her ups and downs. Here’s what immediately jumped out at me—Contreras’ efforts “include establishing an Innovation Zone that provides maximum operating flexibility for the lowest performing cluster of schools in the city.”

So-called iZone districts are not the same the achievement school districts that passed the state House—-and which the N&R hates—- but it was folded into the legislation and provides for charter school options.

Needless to say it will be indeed be interesting to see if Contreras introduces such options to GCS.
