Last week, former Obama economic adviser Austan Goolsbee had a piece in the Wall Street Journal, lamenting the problems confronting the nations of southern Europe that have overspent and overpromised themselves into a disastrous condition. Today’s paper has several sharp reply letters. Here’s one:

I feel Mr. Goolsbee places the blame for Southern Europe’s problems on an inability to devalue its currency. Oh, so Southern Europe’s problems are not overspending on social programs and big-government regulations. The problem is the currency. Then I checked who authored the piece. Low and behold, it’s an old member of the Obama administration from academia. At this point I recognized the liberal mindset. This is about blaming some outside force. And therein lies the true message of the piece. People who don’t take personal responsibility for their circumstances waste time on the blame game instead of fixing their problems.
