Professor Papalas explained that the Greek Socialist Party was voted into power in 1981 on a platform of welfare promises which quickly mushroomed, along with a good deal of corruption enabling party officials to become very wealthy. By the time a “right-wing” government was voted in, most of its leadership figured that it was too late to fight against the welfare mentality. It just went along with what seemed to be a popular trend. Matters got worse and worse, but changing course was politically impossible.
