More than 20 North Carolina counties are asking voters next month to endorse new sales or land-transfer taxes. John Locke Foundation researchers have analyzed the finances in those counties and determined that most could generate much more revenue for high-priority projects by using existing revenue streams more efficiently. JLF work on this issue drew attention this week from the Jacksonville Daily News, which quoted Research Director and Local Government Analyst Michael Sanera; Greensboro News & Record; News at Norman; the Jefferson Post; and the Goldsboro News-Argus. The Locke Foundation has not published a report on Henderson County’s proposed tax increase, but the Hendersonville Times-News solicited input on the topic from communications director Mitch Kokai.
