Nathaniel Macon passed away on this day. His name was synonymous with North Carolina during the early 1800s. He served as U.S. Speaker of the House (1801-1807). In total, he served twelve terms in the U.S. House, and he later served two terms in the U.S. Senate. He was known for fiscal conservatism and being a proponent of strict construction of the U.S. Constitution.
His last public, political action was serving as President of the N.C. Constitutional Convention (1835). Most any institution or place named Macon within the American Southeast is named for the Tar Heel statesman.
