Today, The North Carolina General Assembly’s Committee on Dropout Prevention’s Budget and Program Revisions Subcommittee met via conference call to discuss current budget submissions and program revisions.  When the newly passed budget takes effect on July 1, there will no longer money allocated to continue this program.  As you may recall, the Dropout Prevention program was endorsed and heavily favored by former Speaker Joe Hackney (D-Orange).

While the committee might seem extraneous, they are still in charge of administering money from the 2010 budget to various dropout prevention grants throughout the state.  To date, there are still 78 grantees in the 2010 budget that are receiving money and will continue to be monitored by this committee.

Most of the submissions for grants with last year’s money were approved without any controversy or discussion however; there were four programs that were denied.  Anson County Schools, Communities in Schools of Cabarrus County, Ivory Development Commission and Community Needs Ministries did not fulfill the developmental ideals of the Dropout Prevention Committee and therefore their requests were denied.

Dr. Stoops has evaluated the Dropout Prevention program over the years.  Here’s why it’s a bad idea.
