Dr. Sharon Contreras, superintendent Guilford County Schools (GCS), testified before the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor today. In her written testimony, she thanked the Republican-led North Carolina General Assembly for increasing state appropriations for public schools. She wrote, “I am grateful that the North Carolina state legislature has increased public education funding since 2011…”
Naturally, she complained that it was not enough. But it was refreshing to read an acknowledgment that, despite Medicaid shortfalls and other budgetary pressures, the North Carolina General Assembly continued to invest in public schools following the Great Recession.
